What Is Fair Trade Coffee and Why Should You Drink It?

Buy Island Coconut K-Cup Coffee at CoffeeForLessIn addition to its great, tropical coconut taste, one of the things that may appeal to many coffee drinkers is that Green Mountain Coffee Fair Trade Island Coconut coffee is certified made under fair trade practices. What does this mean for you as a coffee drinker?

Fair trade certification is a product certification that indicates a product is developed and sold under fair trading practices. The fair trade certification is typically granted by one of four international fair trade networks (the Fairtrade Labeling Organization International, the World Fair Trade Organization, the Network of European World Shops, or the European Fair Trade Organization).

Most certified fair trade products feature the FLO International’s “International Fair Trade certification” mark. Products reviewed for fair trade certification are not limited to coffee, either – cotton, fruit juices, tea, vegetables, and cane sugar are some of the other products that can be certified fair trade.

So what exactly does fair trade certification mean? It means the coffee is produced and distributed according to established fair trade standards. For importers, that means promising to pay a minimum fair price to the exporting organization. For exporters, it means working with approved fair trade farming cooperatives, where any surplus on costs of fair trade membership goes to social projects organized by the exporting cooperative.

Drink and Enjoy Green Mountain K-Cup Fair Trade Coffee

Drinking fair trade coffee is a great way to show that you care about fair farming practices globally, and that you care about the environment while enjoying the coffee that you love. With K-cups, you don’t have to make a huge commitment to Island Coconut Coffee. Get as many pods as you want and mix it in with your regular rotation of K-cup coffee pod flavors. Pull it out when you’re looking for a special treat, a magical little getaway from your regular coffee schedule.

What’s The Deal With Keurig Cup Sizes?

There were a ton of things to consider when I went on the market for a new coffee maker. Most importantly, I needed a machine that made delicious coffee fast. As I was doing research, my mom suggested I go with a Keurig. I found that the machine brews various Keurig cup sizes to which I wondered what the benefits would be to choosing one size over the other.

Size Does Matter

Keurig brewers feature sizes ranging anywhere from 2-5 cup sizes. For example, the Keurig Platinum K75 K-Cup Coffee Brewer holds 4 oz., 6 oz., 8 oz., 10 oz., and 12 oz. cup sizes. The amount of coffee I drink on a particular occasion matters to me, so having more choices is appealing. I don’t like to waste coffee on one hand, but I also dislike when I don’t make enough to quench my coffee thirst.

On those days that I’m looking for just a few sips to give me a little extra pep in my step, the smaller Keurig cup sizes come in handy. Rather than brew a full pot of coffee, I can plug a 4 oz. or 6 oz. k-cup into my Keurig.

Ever Heard of a Coffee Tasting Party?

Plenty of people have been to wine tastings. Now, with a variety of Keurig cup sizes at my disposal, I am able to throw coffee tasting parties. Instead of brewing a full pot of coffee in one flavor, I can offer cups of every size and in many flavors.

I am continuously looking around to find different flavors made by my favorite brands like Green Mountain Coffee, Starbucks, and Tully’s. My guests enjoy different flavors in large and small servings so they can sample new flavors and sip on old favorites.

With a variety of Keurig cup sizes, I can prepare them a small cup of coffee of their choice. And, if the person takes a liking to the new flavor, I can always pop in a larger 8 oz., 10 oz., or 12 oz. cup to quickly brew a larger serving.

Mom Is Always Right

One of the best aspects of owning a Keurig is convenience and the ability to choose from various Keurig cup sizes. With the ability to make the perfect up each time, I made sure to thank my mom for her advice. As the saying goes, “Mom is always right!”

Keeping Your Keurig Machine Clean

It may not be a French press or an elaborate drip-pour system, but a Keurig is an economical and convenient way to satiate your coffee fix at home each morning. Designed for ease of use, a Keurig brewer is a godsend for coffee fanatics looking to save time and money.

With all these perks, it’s easy to become as reliant on the Keurig machine as you are on the caffeine it dispenses! If this is true for you, then you know how important it is to keep your Keurig system operating efficiently each morning.

One of the best ways you can keep your pod coffee system running smoothly is to clean your Keurig. Cleaning the Keurig is an essential step to keeping your coffee routine flowing, so read on for five simple tricks you need to know for properly cleaning the Keurig coffee maker.

Safety Check

Keurig cleaning begins with safety. It may seem simple, but before you pour in any Keurig cleaning solution or put in the effort to clean your machine, choose safety first and unplug your machine.

Be Thorough

When cleaning the Keurig, be sure to disassemble the machine and wash each removable part in warm, soapy water. Clean the water reservoir and lid, the mug stand, and the K-cup holder. Clean the filter, too, as you’ll want to be thorough in removing any debris during the Keurig cleaning process.

Wipe the Surface

With a clean microfiber cloth, wipe down the entire surface of the Keurig machine. If you have areas that have suffered greater wear and tear, you may need to use a wet sponge when cleaning your Keurig, but using a microfiber cloth is particularly effective for addressing areas near the K-cup since this is where coffee and tea granules tend to accumulate.

Descale with Vinegar

Perhaps the most essential part of the Keurig cleaning process is descaling the machine. Our trick? Use vinegar as the cleaning solution. Every three to six months, remove lime and scale build up by descaling your brewer. Create your own Keurig cleaning solution by mixing half part white vinegar and half part water to fill the reservoir, then start the brew cycle sans K-cup to clean your Keurig machine.

Repeat with Water

Another important (and often overlooked) trick? Repeat the descaling process with water. Simply use plain tap water as the Keurig cleaning solution to remove any residual vinegar taste.

By following these tricks, you’ll be well on your way to cleaning your Keurig and making sure that your coffee continues brewing perfectly each morning! So don’t delay – be sure to put in the preventive maintenance to keep your Keurig, and your coffee routine, running smoothly.

Here are five common Keurig troubleshooting solutions and easy ways to correct these problems.

Common Problem 1: K-Cup Coffee and Tea Grounds Get into Your K-Cup Holder and Causes a Water Line Clog

Keurig Troubleshooting Solution:

Remove or clean the needle that punctures the K-Cup Pod then do a small cup cleansing brew to clean out any residual. This will ensure any left-over debris is flushed out before you have you start your next brew.

Common Problem 2: K-Cup Brewer Shuts Off Unexpectedly Between Brews

Keurig Troubleshooting Solution:

Remove the water reservoir and insert it back into place. The magnet in the reservoir can become dislodged during brewing from the vibrations in the machine.

Common Problem 3: Not Ready Message on Your Keurig Machine Stays On

Keurig Troubleshooting Solution:

  • Turn off your machine and unplug it
  • Detach the water reservoir
  • Wait 5 seconds then repeat the steps 1 and 2
  • Insert the water reservoir then press the menu button and when the “Not Ready” message appears lower handle

Common Problem 4:  Blinking Blue Light in Water Reservoir

Keurig Troubleshooting Solution:

Simply add more water to the reservoir. All Keurig Brewer models need a minimum amount of water to activate the brewing process, so if you’re reservoir is low the machine will not start.

Common Problem 5: Installing Your Water Filter

Keurig Troubleshooting Solution:

This problem applies to only the models with the water filter feature. If you own one of these models, you can install the filter in three simple steps:

  • Soak the entire filter in cold water for five seconds
  • Place the filter at the bottom of the Water Handle Assembly
  • Set the timing dial two months from the day to ensure it is replaced at the appropriate time

Use these five Keurig troubleshooting solutions for your machine and you’ll ensure your coffee and tea always taste great and your brewer lasts a long time. As a result, you’ll save yourself time and money not having to replace your Keurig K-Cup Brewer.

Donut Shop K-Cups Just Make Sense

Colorful and tasty donuts

Brewing classic coffee with such ease is a privilege granted by modern K-Cup coffee brewing and put to perfect use by Coffee People Donut Shop Coffee K-Cup Pods.

When you go to your favorite donut shop, you might have sprinkles or sugar glaze on your mind, and you might not put too much thought into the coffee you plan on buying to go along with it. Still, that cup of coffee is a crucial part of the whole experience.

After all, that donut you’re about to eat just wouldn’t be quite as wonderful without a steaming cup of Joe to dip it into, right?

You know what we’re talking about: the way the coffee fills all the nooks and crannies and melts the glaze on the donut just a little bit… the sugary sweetness that dances with the crema on the surface of the cup. Coffee and donuts go together perfectly.

Donut Shop Coffee Is Special

The perfect companion to your breakfast confection, or enjoy on its own.

The perfect companion to your breakfast confection, or enjoy on its own.

But donut shop coffee is a special breed. It doesn’t need to be overly sweet, because technically speaking, that’s what the donut is for. No, donut shop coffee has a special role. The perfect companion coffee to your favorite fritter, Old Fashioned, or chocolate cake donut should be simple, bold, fresh, and robust: the perfect counterpoint to the confection’s sugary sweetness.

So what do you do if you’re in the mood for that sweet and savory harmony, but you don’t want to schlep down to the donut shop? Just pick up some donuts on your way home and pop a K-Cup of the Original Donut Shop Coffee into your Keurig. It’s the perfect solution!

Keeping Up With Keurig 2.0 Is Easier Than You Think

By now, you’ve heard of — or may have purchased — Keurig’s new 2.0 brewing system. The machine is touted as a first of its kind, and can brew both a single cup serving, and a four-cup carafe of coffee using a Keurig® K-Carafe Pack.

And whether you’re using an older Keurig model, or the new Keurig 2.0 series, all your favorite K-Cup Pods sold at are compatible! So rest assured — that fresh box of K-Cup Coffee will be brewing in no time.

How Do I Identify Keurig 2.o Compatible K-Cups?

To identify Keurig 2.0 compatible K-Cups, look for the “Keurig Brewed” seal printed on a ring around the outer edge of the K-Cup. Keurig first rolled these changes out in early 2014. For boxes, similarly, you’ll note the symbol designating “For Use in All Keurig K-Cup Brewers.”

We’ve also labeled all of our compatible products on with a convenient “Keurig 2.0 Compatible” orange icon. Look for this image in the Description box when shopping.

While the previous Keurig brewers take coffee pods that work with many different brands, the Keurig 2.0 machine is RFID-limited, meaning only items with a Keurig-branded code will work.

Do the New K-Cups Work in the Old Machines?

The short answer: Yes. All Keurig branded packs will work as usual in the older brewers. Packs that do not have the new “Keurig Brewed” lids (pictured above) will not work in the Keurig 2.0 machines. The best thing to keep in mind is to look for the “Keurig Brewed” seal. This seal ensures the K-Cup can be brewed in older brewers as well as the Keurig 2.0 machine.

Why Don’t the Old K-Cups Work in the New Machine?

The Keurig 2.0 machine reads each lid to identify 2.0-compatible brands to ensure the perfect cup of coffee each time. The Keurig 2.0 will only function with Keurig brand packs, which have been specifically designed to work with the Keurig 2.0 Brewing Technology.

Keurig’s Family of Compatible Brands

From your favorites including Coffee People, Starbucks, and Green Mountain, we offer a wide range of best selling brands that are compatible with both the old Keurig brewers and new Keurig 2.0 machine. Regardless of the type of brewer you’re using, the taste and quality you have come to expect has not changed with the new technology.

For a list of 40+ Keurig 2.0-compatible brands, many of which we carry at, visit Keurig’s Family of Brands page.

‘Tis the Season for Indulgent and Hot Beverages

Mug cozy | Brianne Markowski, Flickr

The holidays are officially over but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy another couple month’s worth of yummy, hot seasonal beverages to make the winter season a little more enjoyable.

We know that seasonal coffee drinks like pumpkin spice lattes and eggnog lattes are on the minds of many right now, so we thought we’d give you a few recipes for these drinks and a couple of others (including a non-coffee bonus treat). If you love the flavors of the season, but don’t want to pay or drive for a hot drink from a coffee shop, you can make your own special recipes at home.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

Pumpkin Spice can be enjoyed on its own or used as part of a delicious recipe.

Want to know how to make a real pumpkin spice latte, with real pumpkin instead of pumpkin flavoring? It’s easy. Simply brew one cup of coffee and pour it into a saucepan. Whisk in 1/4 cup of pureed pumpkin, a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and ground cloves, and 1/4 cup of milk like almond milk or soy milk. Heat to desired temperature, sweeten if you like, and pour into your favorite mug.

Peppermint Mocha

Peppermint mocha is a favorite hot holiday beverage because it offers fun and delicious flavors that have long been associated with the holiday. You can make your very own peppermint mocha with candy canes, cocoa, and a few other ingredients, for yourself and your family.

Kids love this drink, so if you have little ones, then you can easily substitute the brewed coffee for more milk and give them a coffee-free holiday beverage. For adults, whisk 1 cup brewed coffee, 1 heaping tablespoon unsweetened pure cocoa powder, 1/4 cup coconut or soy milk, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract in a saucepan. Heat until it reaches the desired temperature, pour into a mug, and place a candy cane into each cup.

Eggnog Latte

Spicy Eggnog is a traditional holiday favorite and can be enjoyed throughout the winter season.

We love making eggnog lattes with coconut milk. It makes for a rich and creamy eggnog latte that doesn’t have eggs in it, but it still has the familiar flavor of eggnog. Again, start with 1 cup of brewed coffee poured into a saucepan. Add 1/4 cup of full fat coconut milk, 2 tablespoons of sugar, a pinch of ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon of pure vanilla. Whisk, heat to desired temperature, and pour into a special mug.

Hot Apple Cider

To compliment your hot Christmas coffee drinks, you can make a warm apple cider on occasion. For this drink, you’ll want to pour 1 cup of organic apple cider into a saucepan. Add a pinch each of ground cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Heat until warm and ladle into your holiday mug.

Enjoy the Season With a Warm Cup in Your Hand!

All of these drinks are perfect winter treats, and they’re ideal for taking with you in to-go cups as you rush around town this season. Enjoy them, and enjoy the season!
